Van Ray Preston, age 63 of Hamilton, Ga., died Saturday, December 4, 2010 at his residence. Funeral services were held 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at the chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Manchester, with Rev. Zenus Windsor officiating.
Van was born September 11, 1947 in Lineville, AL, a son of the late A.D. Preston and Geneva Harrington Preston. Van was a son, brother father, grandfather, uncle, mason and a friend. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Lineville, Alabama, and Jonesboro Masonic Lodge #87 F&AM in Jonesboro, Ga. He was a man of many titles, and took great pride in being good at every one of them. He loved hunting, fishing, trapping and cultivating. An amateur naturalist and a professional outdoorsman, he understood nature and reveled in it. His time was centeredd around his family, fishing the Flint River, and hunting everything from arrowheads to deer. He was neither judgmental nor overbearing; yet he was the backbone of his children. He was always there with a helping hand, whether it was picking up his granddaughter Savannah from the school bus, or helping his nephew Josh with a broken down truck at midnight. He was always there! A graduate of Lineville High School class of 1965, after graduating, he worked hard on the freight docks for this family. Van enjoyed reading, learning, and sharing what he knew. Like the old man in THE OLD MAN AND THE BOY, "He know might near everything but mostly he was not painful with it". Van fit into any type of crowd whether it was with children, the elderly, the rich or the poor. He could catch a fish in a mud hole, and always had a joke handy. he was a man among men! HE WILL BE MISSED MORE THAN WORDS CAN DESCRIBE. You rest in peace my uncle, friend, mentor, advisor, cook, driver, proofreader, roommate, hunting and fishing partner. We will all miss you!
His survivors include two daughters, Dawn Preston-Ross and her husband Andy Ross of Midland, Ga. and Tanya Marla Preston and Darren Czech of Atlanta, Ga.; a granddaaughter Savannah Rae Ross of Midland and a grandson Carter Micah Czech of Atlanta; three sisters Carol Preston of Montgomery, AL, Joan Nieves of Birmingham, AL and Julia Martin of Stranton, VA; family and friends to include but not limited to Johnny Carter, Angie Carter, Josh Carter and Macy Carter.
